Aluminium oxide (AO) membranes feature uniform, densely-packed honeycomb pore structures that contribute to precise retention and high porosity characteristics. Composed of pure anodised aluminium, these filters have essentially no organic extractables.

Virtually transparent when wet, this material shows minimal autofluorescence and exhibits excellent surface retention properties. This makes it ideal for use in microscopic analyses. AO membranes are non-cytotoxic and have good biocompatibility; features that enable use as cell culture subtrate. Additionally, their uniform, noninterconnected pores present a suitable template for the synthesis of nanostructures.

Handling Aluminium Oxide Membranes

The aluminium oxide (AO) membrane filters are extremely brittle and will fracture if subjected to bending. Great care must be used when handling and placing the filters.

They cannot be handled using fingers, and must be handled with smooth membrane tweezers or with vacuum tweezers.

When choosing vacuum tweezers, make sure to select one that apply continuous vacuum with an electrically powered motor. Continuous vacuum is required since the AO membrane is permeable and will have some small airflow.
