What is Butyric Acid? Also known as butanoic acid, it is a short-chain fatty acid with a strong, pungent, and unpleasant odour, often described as rancid or cheesy. It's a colourless liquid at room temperature and is naturally produced by bacteria during the fermentation of dietary fiber in the gut, and is also found in animal fats and plant oils.

Consistent Quality: We provide only high-quality Butyric Acid, meeting Food Grade standards, ensuring reliable and consistent performance for all applications.

Shipped from Manchester, UK Facility: Sourced and bottled in non-toxic, chemical-resistant containers to ensure safe handling and preserve product quality during transport.

Frequent Uses

Food Industry

Employed as a flavouring agent and preservative in food and drinks.

Plastic Production

Used to produce cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), which is used in a wide variety of tools, paints, and coatings, and is more resistant to degradation than cellulose acetate. CAB can degrade with exposure to heat and moisture, releasing butyric acid.

Ester Production

Low-molecular-weight esters of butyric acid, such as methyl butyrate, have mostly pleasant aromas or tastes. As a consequence, they are used as food and perfume additives.

  • Flavouring Agent: Butyric Acid 99% Food Grade is widely used as a flavouring agent in the food industry. It imparts a characteristic, buttery taste and aroma to various food products, including dairy, confectionery, baked goods, and snacks.
  • Food Preservative: Due to its antimicrobial properties, Butyric Acid is used as a food preservative to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in certain food products.
  • Pharmaceutical Applications: It is also utilised in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of various drugs, including analgesics, antibiotics, and sedatives.
  • Industrial Applications: Butyric Acid finds applications in various industrial processes, such as the production of plasticisers, solvents, synthetic flavours, and fragrances.
  • Animal Feed Additive: It is sometimes added to animal feed as a supplement to enhance digestion and promote the overall health of livestock.
